run and read
I was out way too late last night with my friends and then got up extremely early to catch the ferry to Rockaway Beach. The ferry ride was wonderful and it was the perfect beach day. I was able to catch up on a bit of sleep, finished one book and started another, took a nice walk down the beach and spent some quality time with friends. When we got back, I was pooped but wanted to be sure to get...

post run pizza
After a great night at the Staten Island Yankee game and staying up way too late, there was no way I was going to fit a run in before work. Fortunately, my plans for this evening weren’t til later, so I was able to fit a run in after work. I did a quick 4 mile run as my schedule said and then lifted at the gym.
My brother and I had plans for him to try Artichoke Basille’s...

rise and shine yoga
(sunrise photo I took in the Amazon this May, Manhattan didn’t look quite like that this morning)
My yoga routine is usually in the evenings with a friend or two, but this week I have several plans after work and knew I wouldn’t be able to work out if I didn’t do so beforehand. This resulted in me climbing up the stairs to yoga at 7am this morning. I still had some sleep in my...

fan-tastic workout
I decided I would do intervals at the gym today so I could do some strength training afterwards. I jogged to the gym and then hopped on the treadmill for three miles of intervals. These seemed to go by faster than the ones on the track. I’d run for two minutes then sprint for one and repeated this until I had hit 3 miles. My total run was 4 with the half mile jog to and from the gym. The gym...

intervals and vitamins
Intervals are so important to training. They challenge your body in different ways than your long runs. You could do speed or hill intervals, hopefully both over the course of a week. Today I mixed some hill intervals into my cross training. I ran to the gym and did thirty minutes on the elliptical, alternating between incline 4, resistance 1 and incline 12, resistance 8. It was great simulating...

lovely little run by the beach
Today was supposed to be filled with rain and thunderstorms. Fortunately, it wasn’t! I woke up very early and leisurely enjoyed scones, Barry’s Tea (an essential in my life) and the Boston Globe on the back porch til we realized the beautiful weather was here to stay and headed off to Nantasket beach. I didn’t even have a bathing suit, but borrowed an old top of my...

run with dad
I’m home for the weekend and was able to go out for a run with my father this morning. He’s training for the Falmouth Road Race too and is working on building up miles. I only needed to do 5 miles so we set off on a run with the plan that I’d continue on once we looped back toward the house. I love running with my father when I’m home, we go at a comfortable pace and chat...

unexpected rest day
I feel like a lump. I was supposed to wake up at 6:15 this morning and go for a 3 mile run. Nothing big, totally manageable, but my quads are still so out of whack from Monday that getting out of bed was tough. That, combined with the Benadryl I had to take before bed, resulted in me not making my run. I can’t go later this evening because I have our client’s summer party. I hate...

this sweating and breathing and becoming
Sarah and I were able to go to yoga tonight. We go to Yoga to the People on St. Mark’s and love it. The studio is unique with three rooms set up on separate floors in an apartment building. It’s incredibly popular among people of all experience levels and income brackets. When I got to the studio at 7, there were already at least 30 people lined up outside for the 7:30 class. Sarah and...

damon dog
Today’s morning run was a hot one but pretty fun. My quads are very tight from last night, but I think the run helped. I’m kind of getting back in to the swing of things doing intervals. Thought they’re a challenge, I love knowing that I’m really pushing my body, plus it helps when I like to do an all-out sprint at the end of a race.
When I turned into the area...

total body ouch
My friends and I couldn’t get out of work in time to get to yoga tonight, but I was able to catch a Total Body Conditioning class at my gym. Because my gym is pretty small and not a chain, there aren’t tons of classes, but the ones they have are rarely packed which make for a nice, personal experience. I haven’t taken a class in a LONG time. In fact, I think the last one I went...

tubing and continued heat wave
Friday night my friends and I took the Metro North up to Greenwich to stay over our friend Peter’s house. We had plans to go tubing in the Catskills Saturday morning and we all thought it would be easier to head out together. Because I woke up in a different bed (and state!) than my own, my long run was going to have to wait until Sunday. I would love to spin our adventures Saturday into a...

chocolately goodness
This morning’s run was great. I got up a little earlier and had a frozen waffle with Chocolate PB2 and some water while watching the news. I usually don’t eat before weekday workouts, but perhaps that was the key! The six miles went very quickly. It’s still unbelievably hot, but the cloud coverage helped keep it from being stifling. There were a lot of other runners out there...

start the day with namaste
So like I said earlier, Mondays are usually my yoga days but because I’ve been missing it I decided to skip my Wednesday elliptical workout and start my day at Yoga to the People. (more on this fabulous studio in another post)
If you told me in college that yoga could be done on my non-running days, I would have scoffed at you, insisting that it wasn’t nearly enough of a workout....

intervals on the track
Last night I read this article which provided some great tips about whether you should exercise with a cold. Since mine is all congestion, I knew I’d be good today (and I was!).
This morning I did two miles of intervals on the East River track. It’s a nice mile jog there and another back so I got in 4 miles. You would have thought it was 8:30 am, not 6:30, the track was so packed. I...

play on playa
Monday evenings I usually go to yoga with Rach or Sarah but unfortunately tonight I worked a little late and missed class. I’m still sneezing and/or blowing my nose every few minutes, so perhaps it’s a blessing in disguise.
After being mocked by my 15 year old sister the other day for being “so behind” on popular music, I think I need to update my iPod and create a new...

no sneezing at this workout
Ironically, a day after reading FitSugar’s article about preventing a summer cold I woke up feeling a bit sniffly. I hoped it would go away, but Saturday it got worse and Sunday a bit more worse. Perhaps that’s why my run didn’t go so well Saturday. Anyway, I was determined to sweat out this cold. Plus I knew that scheduling a workout would help me get back into a normal eating...
hot morning run
I had to really schedule this week’s long run because my cousin and her friend are in town. I got up early, had a waffle with peanut butter and headed out for 7 miles. It is still blazingly hot. Struggled a bit through the 7 miles, I found myself looking for the next bubbler (yes, I know, gross that I drink from those, but when you’re hot, you’re hot). Because of time...
rest day - thoughts on charity
I had really wanted to go to yoga before work Friday morning, but I knew after getting back from the movie post midnight, my body would appreciate the sleep more, making Friday a nice rest day. I frequently feel bad about my rest days, probably because I still eat as much as my other days, but I know they are essential parts of training.
I’ll take this opportunity to talk a bit more about the...

hot hot hot
The heat is still on in Manhattan. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help runners. My air conditioner has been waking me up in the middle of the night, leading to a bad night’s sleep. I tried going without it but just woke up sweating profusely. The lack of sleep lead to my pressing snooze through this morning’s run. I brought my sneakers to work and thought I could make the best of...

heatwave workouts
The Northeast has been hit by a crazy heatwave. Yesterday’s record breaking 103 degree temperature was enough to send me to the gym for my run. I jogged to the gym and did 3 miles of intervals. Despite a bit of AC in the gym, I was dragging. I have to remember to stay very hydrated today. I was that wicked sweaty girl in Trader Joe’s post gym.
This morning I walked to the gym to...

intro
Through the magic of the New York Road Runner’s 9+1 Program, I have gained entry to the 2010 ING NYC Marathon. Amongst the thousands of people who are running the marathon there are stories of overcoming great obstacles to rise above and cross that finish line.
I’m not one of them. I’m just a regular girl, working in NYC, trying to fit in my training. This blog may only be of...
