I won’t recap all of my workouts, but there have been a few significant events that can’t go without mentioning. The first is B ran the 2011 NYC Marathon! This was his first marathon and he says it will not be his last. Though I was kind of sad not to be running it this year, I could not have anticipated how happy I would be watching him accomplish such an incredible goal. Beforehand I had sweatbands embroidered with “BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE” on them. Boom is Brian’s nickname and this quote is from a hilarious Tosh.0 episode. I had just put my headband on when I went to see Brian with his family in Brooklyn around mile 5. There were tons of train issues because of the weekend and I was majorly stressed I wouldn’t see him, fortunately all of a sudden we spotted this big, handsome, sweaty boy running towards us. We all screamed, he hugged his mama and he was off! We were then planning to catch him at our friends K + B’s apt on 1st and 91st. Though we ran there, we were again nervous we missed him but then he came barreling through! He looked so great and happy! His siblings and I decided we could totally see him one more time on 5th ave so we literally ran several avenues over. We were tracking him on the NYRR app (which was terrible, they better improve it for next year) and thought we may have missed him but then he went by. He didn’t look as happy as he had during the previous miles so we yelled even louder. We then made our way across the park to meet up with their parents and R to meet B at the finish.
In the end, B ran 03:32:46! I was so proud of him! His family met all of our friends at the Irish-American bar by us while he got cleaned up. After a shower he almost looked 100% and we went to join everyone to watch the Jets and Pats games. We had a great evening (that went long into the night) and celebrated B’s accomplishment. Watching B run the NYC Marathon, just a year after I did really made me want to run another again soon. Stay tuned to see which I choose!
PS - I kept saying that day, that the best thing I did in 2010 was run the NYC Marathon, and the best thing I did in 2011 was ask out the boy who would run it later that year. I still stand by that.

the Equinox conundrum
Tuesday I had the day off and planned to test out Equinox. My parents had received a free day pass when they checked into the NYC Marathon finish line stands and they gave them to me. I had no intention of signing up, but rather thought using their facilities would be a nice treat. There are two locations fairly equidistant from my apartment but I decided to try one over the other. I walked over (a quick 10-15 minutes, depending upon how you catch the lights) and was pleased to see it was a second level gym. After giving my pass I was introduced to a membership advisor who brought my around the gym. It was amazing. I’ve belonged to nice gyms in my day but this was above and beyond. Not only was it incredibly nice, but the class schedule was so appealing. After training for the marathon and pushing my body in that way, I really want to tackle new things. Incorporating new workouts and challenges could really push my body to the limit and I think I could do that through Equinox. I left the advisor and got in a great hour plus workout, plugging my iPod into the elliptical and bike, using the neatly stacked free weights, not being overcrowded or intimidated, it was amazing. I’m now seriously debating signing up for the gym. It’s absurdly expensive, but I think as someone who would use it all the time, it may be worth it. Anyone out there belong to Equinox or another expensive gym? What do you think?

The NY Daily News Running blog posted this photo of the Rhino in Central Park. I saw him as we ran over the Veranzano Bridge. When asked if he’d wear the costume the whole time he responded he would try. Looks like he did! Congrats Rhino guy!

Fortunately I’m not feeling this bad, but walking downstairs this morning wasn’t fun.

Today I rushed over to the Marathon Expo between client meetings. NYRR had shuttles that left from Grand Central which made the trip to the west side much easier. When I got to the expo, there were Disney style length lines - lots of twists and turns and then suddenly you see even more lines! But it was so efficiently run that we went through fairly quickly. Once inside, I grabbed my number and then my technical T. I lamely stressed a bit over the size, tech shirt sizes are so varied, sometimes I’m a small, other times and XS or a M. These looked big so I decided to grab and XS, I chose properly and it fit great! I waited a bit to walk into the expo, hoping to grab some more free swag, but it was mostly things for purchase. I decided to scoot out and get back to work. Thank goodness I left when I did, because on the shuttle back I got a call about a work meeting. Despite knowing I need to rest, I pretty much sprinted from 42nd and 3rd to 47th and Fifth. It was interesting. Overall, great expo. I wish I had more time and moolah to grab stuff, but hopefully I can pick up a jacket after I’ve completed the marathon. Less than 36 hours til the start! So excited!

countdown is on
Holy smokes. The NYC Marathon is 5 days from today. Holy smokes. I cannot believe it’s finally here. I’m not really nervous, just very eager! I read something the other day that keeps repeating in my mind - “nothing you do this week will help you, anything you do this week could hurt you.” While I’m not sure the first part is true, the second part has me a bit nervous! I’m such a klutz that I’ve been trying really hard not to fall or do something stupid! In terms of the things that could help, I’m drinking at least 2 liters of water a day, upping my carb intake (though still balancing it will lots of veggies and protein) and trying to get a lot of sleep. For some reason waking up this morning was dreadful. I was pooped. However, I got up at 7 and went out for 4 miles over the BK and Manhattan bridges (like the other day). It’s starting to get really cold out and it felt good to get moving. The Kara Goucher quote I mentioned in the previous post reminded me to keep on going despite the pain in my knee.

By the time I got to work, I was pooped and really looking forward to my hot morning cuppa tea. But I forgot that my office supply had dwindled and I was all out! Fortunately I had a nice free drink coupon from Dunkin for my birthday so I met my coworker A and got a big ol’ vanilla ice coffee. Though I should stay away from too much caffeine this week, one drink won’t kill me and hopefully this will power me through the day. (side note- I also got at kick out of the fact that my Esssie nail polish color looks like coffee with TONS of cream, next to my coffee with just a splash of skim it looks soo light!)
