• Last weekend B went out to Portland to visit friends from college who work at Nike and raided the employee store. He very generously brought me back a whole bunch of swag. In addition to two new pairs of Nike Frees, in very fresh colors according to him, he got me two pairs of shorts, two t’s and a tank. I especially love the “always on the run” graphic t-shirt. It looks like a shirt he would wear but it’s in my size!
This morning I tested out the gray frees, black shorts and matching blue top on a run in the rain. I ran along the tip of Manhattan and what started as a drop here and there turned into a fairly steady shower. In Battery Park I took a turn and headed to the Wall Street gym where I put in some time on the elliptical before running home. The new kicks felt great and I looked pretty snazzy in my new outfit. Thanks B!

  • After a wonderful Memorial Day weekend that included much too much eating and drinking and not enough exercising, I did a killer workout at the gym this evening. I mixed it up with 20 minutes on the bike, 10 on the stairmaster, 15 walking at the highest treadmill incline and then did one of the Nike Training Club App’s workout. I really liked the variety of my cardio and with the strength training I chose tonight, my whole body was feeling it or that could just be my lobster colored sunburn, whoops. (note, if you’re used to wearing 70, dropping to 30, even when constantly reapplied, is a terrible idea)
In light of Memorial Day I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone who has served or is serving our country. We are forever grateful for what you do and the freedoms it allows us. Thank you.

  • I had to be at work a little earlier than usual yesterday and decided to sign up for a spinning class at the Equinox near my office. The instructor whose class I usually take on Tuesdays also teaches a 7:45-8:30 class which allowed me to sleep in a little bit and still get to work on time. The class was awesome. We did hills and sprints and I was really feeling it. For the last ten minutes we were told to do whatever we wanted but to try to get in 5 pushes. Whether our push was speed or resistance, for long or short, it’s up to us. She talked about how our workout is up to us and that by giving us the freedom to push ourselves in the last portion of class she’s really letting us take control. It was such an interesting concept to me. In general I like training for events because then I know I have to get a certain number of miles or certain amount of cross-training in. I’ve grown to love spinning because I can kind of tune out for 45 minutes and just push my body to do what the instructor tells me. What R was saying totally went against this. It forced me to motivate myself and I found I did not 5 but 7 pushes in the 10 minutes! I kept alternating between sprints and big hills. Man was I sweating at the end of it. It really felt great to have gotten that extra surge in the end and knowing that it was all me getting me there.
On another note, as I booked it from the gym to my office (with a stop at CVS to pick up Raisin Bran Crunch on sale) I dropped a sneaker! Without noticing! So scattered. I didn’t even realize until about 4:30 that afternoon. I can’t really be too upset about losing these sneaks, I actually won them on a Twitter contest when the Nike+ Lunars just came out. I got some good miles on them and didn’t pay a cent. I had been planning to get a new pair but now I’ll have to get two pairs! (I always have two pairs of sneakers in rotation but I wanted to get a pair to leave down the Cape as well) Hopefully I can find a store doing a decent sale soon. I’ve been thinking of trying the Nike frees but also really love my Adidas, we’ll have to see what feels good!

  • run with Nike

With my schedule saying 20 miles today, I decided to get my bum up to Niketown to go on their group run. Nike’s Run Club is an awesome way to start running (they always have a run/walk group) or to do your long runs with a group. The pacers are so nice, always making sure people make it and are very encouraging. Groups leave from Niketown 3 days a week and they always send out several distance and pace groups. Unfortunately, because of my shin splints, my schedule is a bit off of everyone else’s. So most people today were doing an off week of 13 miles. Making the best of the situation, I decided to run with the group down the West Side Highway to South Cove and back to the store. To get in more miles, I didn’t turn to the store but went up into Central Park. There was a half marathon going on, so for a few miles I had to avoid it, after that though it was pretty smooth sailing. Until my knee started throbbing. At this point, I had already run 18 miles and decided it wasn’t worth crippling myself for the rest of the weekend. I walked the remaining two miles back to the store and continued on with my day.

The group I ran with along the West Side highway was a couple and another woman who started talking to me around mile 5. I’m not a big chatter during runs, especially not of distances I have never run before, but she was awfully sweet. She told me this would be her fourth marathon and offered some encouraging words. One thing that really gave me hope was something she heard from Mary Wittenberg, the CEO of NYRR. Apparently, after the 18 mile training run two weeks ago, Mary said that if you can do the hills of Central Park for 18 miles, you can definitely tackle the marathon. That was a HUGE relief. I have been afraid of my brain getting in the way and second guessing myself since I won’t ever run 26.2 miles until race day. But knowing that 18 miles of those hills may have been equally challenging was comforting. I enjoyed that run and am now even more excited for the race! Glad I was able to chat with that kind woman during our run.

This blog served as my day-to-day training record for the New York City Marathon with a little bit about how I have fun in the city. I finished my first marathon in 4:17:48 and had the time of my life. I also raised over $2000 for Camp Casey. Post marathon this blog will follow just some of my continued healthy endeavors and races and will provide me with a place to record great running articles, quotes or facts I read. Enjoy!
