• Monday night, B worked late and I hadn’t gotten in a morning workout so decided to pair doggy duty with exercise. We hadn’t yet taught Sady how to run with us but I’ve been told she’s old enough now (4.5 months) so I laced up my sneaks, grabbed her stuff and off we went. I took her over to the Hudson River running path which she is somewhat familiar with. I was pleased at how she ran next to me and only a gentle “stay with me” would remind her if she got off track. I had been told there was a dog park in the world financial center so I took the rugrat over there, thinking it could be her break. About halfway there she wanted to stop but I encouraged her. She seemed like she was having fun. I let her play for a while in the park while I caught my breath. When we left, she must have realized we were heading home and bolted back. She definitely wasn’t staying with me but rather dragging me back. I found out later she and B run back from the dog park so she was used to this. Since I had only gotten about a mile and a half, I went to the gym and did another 15 minutes of intervals on the treadmill. It was a lot of fun running with Miss Sady and I can’t wait to take her out more!

  • I have been the worst healthy living blogger EVER lately! Work has been insane and with my birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, designing invitations for family and friends, watching tonnns of football and fitting in fitness, I haven’t had the time to write about it. My apologies. On a positive note, in addition to all of these responsibilities, B and I have added a wonderful little addition to our lives. Little Miss Sady Shamrock is our new Boxer/Hound puppy and we love her to death! I can’t wait til she’s a bit older and we can actually run together. However, she’s also taken a bit of time away from blogging, though clearly I’ve found time to blog from her point of view! I hope to get back on it as I have a few races coming up. Fortunately, my routine has stayed pretty consistent and I’ve been keeping up with my workouts. I haven’t been running a ton, but with January on the horizon, I plan to. Stay tuned friends!

  • With the Falmouth Road Race two weeks away, I had to be sure to get in my long run this weekend. This week I’d been feeling like crap (scratchy throat, coughing, runny nose) but knew I had to push through. I headed out to the BK Bridge, hoping to run in Brooklyn Bridge Park, only to see it was completely swamped with tourists. In a quick redirect, I scooted over to the west side and ran up, crossing over the above cool bridge I’ve never actually crossed before. The seven miles was tough in the heat and because of my cold my breathing felt off. However, I was able to get through it and felt great afterward. I had planned the run so I would end at my gym where I proceeded to go in, drink so water, stretch and do some ab work. Whenever I do this I wonder if the greeters think I’m a lazy bum, coming in for only 15 minutes, I always want to self consciously tell them “I just ran 7 miles here!” but I would feel even sillier.

On my walk back from the gym I saw three awesome dogs (I believe they were Vizslas, like Sadie) jumping in and out of the City Hall Park fountain. It was so entertaining. I wanted to scoop one (or all!) of them up and take them home with me. Obviously I didn’t, but hopefully some time in the future I’ll have my own little doggy to take out on runs. :-)

  • Because we only spent a few days in Hingham, I really wanted to make sure to get to Bare Cove Park. I absolutely love taking Damon to Bare Cove. He’s allowed to go off the leash while I run and is really good about coming when I call and staying close. Damon hates the leash and the 50 yards or so that he has to wear one in the parking lot seems like torture to him. Otherwise, it’s a perfect arrangement. He gets to say hi to all the other dogs while I get to have a nice, scenic run. I felt decent on the run, tried to take it easy. We really lucked out because on the drive home it started to pour. I was glad both Damo and I got in some exercise or else we’d be pretty darn antsy the rest of the day.

  • Yesterday’s workout consisted of running between terminals and then a nice sunset walk with B and the above beauty in Battery Park. Some days you just need to take it easy and enjoy life.

  • I went back to Bare Cove Park on Saturday for a nice run with Damon. The park was absolutely packed with people and dogs. Once beyond a certain point, the dogs can be off their leash which allows them the freedom to explore and have fun without pulling their owners off the path. I let Damon play with the other dogs and he was exceptionally well behaved and would come by my side when called. The weather was really cold, especially with the breeze off the water, but once I got moving the fact that I was only wearing shorts and a long sleeve top didn’t bother me. Damon and I just got in a few miles, my IT band has been pretty sore without being able to stretch it. It felt great to get out and run though. I loved running with Damon and wish I could bring him out with me in NYC.

How cute (and tired) does the little guy look on the car ride home?

Today’s morning run was a hot one but pretty fun. My quads are very tight from last night, but I think the run helped. I’m kind of getting back in to the swing of things doing intervals. Thought they’re a challenge, I love knowing that I’m really pushing my body, plus it helps when I like to do an all-out sprint at the end of a race.

When I turned into the area surrounding my apartment building, I spotted a Golden Doodle puppy that looked like Damon’s twin! Golden Doodles don’t all look alike, some look more like poodles while others are closer to Golden Retrievers. This one had the exact same face as Damon! I spoke with the owner and the puppy’sname was Simon, he was a 9 month old mini Golden Doodle. Damon is part Standard Poodle, so he’s very tall. I also can’t believe my “puppy” is over 6 years old. He’s such a great dog, so obedient and very loving. Seeing Simon this morning and thinking about Damon only further increased my desire to have a dog in the city. I’d love to have a constant run companion and a snuggly dog to curl up with on the couch. However, until I work at an agency that allows dogs, I don’t think I’ll get one. The idea of leaving a puppy at home alone for 10-12 hours at a time is so sad. I know a lot of people do that and it works for them, but I personally would want him/her to get to hang out with me as much as possible.

Doesn’t he look so cute? Just chillin on my parents’ porch.

This blog served as my day-to-day training record for the New York City Marathon with a little bit about how I have fun in the city. I finished my first marathon in 4:17:48 and had the time of my life. I also raised over $2000 for Camp Casey. Post marathon this blog will follow just some of my continued healthy endeavors and races and will provide me with a place to record great running articles, quotes or facts I read. Enjoy!
